The Season of Christmas

AP.jpg The true meaning of Christmas is often wrapped in packages which cannot be placed under trees.  Boxes, paper and ribbons are only symbols of that which give presents their real meaning.  Ornaments and decorations are limited substitutes of life's most precious moments.  The paraphernalia of Christmas is an interesting study in human behavior.  Whether we be saint or sinner, whether we embrace the Christian faith or some other, this time of the year seems to bring out our festive spirits.  It is as though God has given us this special occasion to express the deepest feelings of our lives.

As we remember the Christ child, we are made conscious of those who are nearest and dearest to us.  Christmas gives us a reason to be together as family, friends and church.  The story of our Savior's birth, while often in the background of our festivities, inspires us to reflect upon life's beautiful and meaningful relationships.  The benevolent attitude of God in giving His only Son creates within most of us a generous disposition at Christmas.

No other season of the year compares to what transpires at Christmas.  Therefore, behind all the decorations and festivities is the mystery of our great need for Christmas celebration.  Perhaps the stringing of our many lights is indicative of our need for that eternal light which dispels the darkness within us.  The wreaths of greenery which we display are symbols of life and our search for everlasting greenness where flowers never fade.  The music of Christmas is sung with great gusto in hopes that the melody of that manger will dispel the sadness of our souls.

No doubt the need for people, and God, and love, and hope, and life at its best is illustrated in the way we do Christmas.  To minimize Christmas may ignore some of the deepest needs of our human personality.  In spite of its sinful, secular and materialistic aspects, there is a Godly dimension to the Christmas season.  To find Him is to find ourselves and all that is possible for us to have a joyful Christmas time.  May your season of Christmas be bright.
