THE RESURRECTION
EVENT
The resurrection of Jesus is Christianity's most awesome event. It is the focal point of all our theology. It is the source of genuine excitement. It is the motivation for our preaching and the inspiration of our singing. No event in the history of humankind has offered such redemptive possibilities as the resurrection. None of the other religions of the world give us this exceptional glimpse of God.
The real power and glory of the resurrection, however, is that it transcends that first Easter morning. It is more than a historical event, it is a continuing experience. The energy of God's new life was not exhausted on His Son. His resurrection capabilities are still operative. The profound truth of Easter reminds us that God is a "dead-raiser." Not only does this have eternal implication, it has value for us in the here and now. To be dead in our trespasses and our sins is a death from which our Lord wishes to raise us. To be dead in spiritual apathy with no evangelistic zeal is a death our Lord wishes to help us conquer. To be dead in bitterness, hostility and revenge is a death our Lord wants us to survive by instilling His forgiving love. To be dead in religious hypocrisy and self-righteous superiority is a death we can overcome as our Lord teaches us the meaning of humble submission.
The spirit and power of resurrection permeate our world today, even as we celebrate The Resurrection event. The most exciting news which emerges from Easter and all of God's Word is that we do not have to stay the way we are. There is no longer a need to quarrel over who is the greatest in the kingdom of God. We serve a loving God who inspires us to seek peace. The central theme of resurrection hope is grace and not retaliation. Sin can be forgiven. Wars and rumors of war can cease. Death does not have the final word. The grave does not control our destiny. Truth marches on in spite of our puny defense. In faith, we shall overcome because, "He is not here, He is risen from the dead."
