Motherhood-Womanhood

Mother's Day is a good time to highlight the feminine contribution to life. While not all women are biological mothers, they do reflect the maternal aspect of God. Although God is often perceived as a paternal being there are scriptures which suggest God is both mother and father of us all. Jesus likened God to a mother hen who would have gathered Jerusalem about her as a brood of little chicks if they would have permitted it. The psalmist described God as One who "shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings shall you trust." In Isaiah we find this motherly promise of God: "As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you." Since both male and female were created in the image of God, it is logical to conclude that womanhood is likewise an image of God.

Having created gender, God is not totally defined by it. God is above and beyond either maleness or femaleness. The masculine pronoun is used as a point of reference. In no way does it say all there is to say about the gender of God. Sometimes womanhood has been relegated to an inferior position by a male dominated society. Masculinity overwhelms femininity whenever brute force is worshiped. We fail to see the power of tenderness and the sheer energy of gentle ways if muscle strength is what impresses us.

God had a purpose for creating two distinctly different aspects of humanity. The strength of womanhood is best when Christian women express their God-given femininity. A society cannot survive without the contribution of women. Therefore, let us celebrate Mother's Day with appreciation for all womanhood. Women have a marvelous capacity for discipline and devotion. They are gloriously equipped for both motherhood and servanthood. Indeed, we honor the women of the Bible who belong to our spiritual heritage. Let us not forget, however, to honor the women today who bless us as they serve God.

Although God is like a mother, the larger truth is that a godly mother reflects the character of God. A good mother acts toward her family like God acts toward us. Her finest motherly qualities are an extension of the character of God. Because no mother in her own strength can always be godly, she needs a close relationship with God. Rise up, women of God, and show us the motherly side of God.
