MONEY

AP.jpg Money is a fickle "god" because it demands an awesome sacrifice in terms of time and energy to acquire it, but it never quite produces that for which we dream.  The price tag for life's true economy is measured by more than dollars and cents.  The investment portfolio for lasting security includes more than stocks and bonds.  Although money is essential to the survival of life, it does not meet our deepest needs.  There is no way to finance real happiness.  A good conscience is not a commodity to be charged to our credit card.  There is no market in which we can buy peace of mind.  There is no insurance policy against the possibility of troubles and trials.

Whatever value money may have for us is derived from our commitment to the things which money cannot buy.  It is a happy person indeed who sees money in the context of God's grace.  None of us is worthy of God's material blessings, yet He has allowed most of us some measure of economic security.  It is a reason for real humility when we fully grasp how fragile and dependent is our human existence.  Were it not for such things as health, education, family and other opportunities over which we have little or no control, we could not survive.

Of course, we have to adjust and cooperate with life's circumstances, but the bottom line of it all is that God has been good to us.  To understand and appreciate God's benevolent attention toward us is the beginning of Christian stewardship.  A financial commitment to God is more than just a willingness to tithe.  It is a recognition of partnership with God which affects everything we do and say.  From this perspective, money is not in competition with God.  It becomes His servant and a means for our continuing discipleship.  Our spiritual as well as our physical survival may be indexed by the use of our money.
