Jesus Is Lord
Sometimes we talk about "making Jesus Lord" as though it were a
title we give Him. We approach His authority as if it were
bestowed upon Him by majority vote. Perhaps we feel a bit in
control when we try to adjust His sovereignty to meet the various
needs of our lives. According to the scripture, however it is
God who made Jesus both Lord and Christ. Our position as
Christians is one of submission. We confess His Lordship as we
struggle to obey His demands for discipleship. We honor His
teachings as being far superior to our own private religious
opinions. We seek to capture his spirit as the only way to
develop a Godly disposition We grow to see that Jesus is Lord, no
matter what our individual responses may be.
We may try to put words in His mouth and twist His teachings to
promote our own prejudices, but His truth will eventually conquer our
heresy. We may try to hide our unworthy lives behind pleasing
platitudes and pious phrases, but His light will eventually reveal
our discrepancies. Because Jesus is Lord, we are dependent
people. We are dependent on His love to sustain us in an
environment of hate. We are dependent on his grace to restore
and reclaim us from our persistent tendency to violate his claims
upon our lives. We are dependent on His presence to steady us
amid the storms and struggles of life.
Because Jesus is Lord, there is a sense of authority about life that
is redemptive. His Lordship calls out the best that is within
us and reminds us that nothing shall separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Not only is Jesus Lord over the
Kingdom of God, He is Lord over the satanic forces of evil.
There is no power superior to Him in heaven or earth.
Recognizing Jesus as Lord means that we do not make up our own
rules. We do not worship other gods regardless of how religious
they may appear. Our love and our loyalty are to him who
invites us to take up a cross, to lose our own lives and to come
follow Him.
