"IS THIS ALL
THERE IS?"
Sometimes in the
scheme of things we find ourselves asking, "Is this all
there is?" As life progresses we wonder if we have
seen it all, done it all, and been everywhere we need to
go. In a society which exaggerates excitement we often
are made to feel we are missing something. The world of
merchandising is always wanting to sell us something.
It preys on our irresistible urge for more and better things
out of life. There is a sense in which our economy
thrives on our restless pursuits.
While there is
nothing wrong with having things and doing things, there must
be a larger definition of life. Jesus said that life
does not consist only in the abundance of things
possessed. There is a spiritual aspect to our being
which must not be neglected. The tangible gains its
meaning from the intangible. The natural derives its
beauty from the supernatural. The material has no value
apart from the spiritual. There must be more to us than
surface appearances. Physical beauty is only
skin-deep. Affluence is only a facade.
Intelligence is not necessarily wisdom. What is seen is
not always who we are.
The bottom line is
where the human soul and God intersect. We are created
with a need for divine companionship. We hunger for
righteousness and we detest our unrighteous
inclinations. Love is the goal of our lives even though
hate complicates our affections. Faith is the victory
while doubt contributes to many of our failures. We
struggle for peace amid the discomfort of despair.
Heaven is our home, but we cling tenaciously to this earthly
domain. We are not sure of the unknown, and for this
reason we try to create our own castles of comfort and
convenience. The search for God is in everything we
do. Our need to be noticed, our need to succeed, our
need to find pleasure, and our need to be needed are all
expressions of our search for something beyond
ourselves.
Where, then, do we
find relief for this quest of our souls? Are there
answers to the question "Is this all there
is?" The Bible reminds us that if we search for
God we shall find Him when we have searched for Him with all
our heart. God is present in our daily
fulfillment. He gives us contentment for jobs well
done. He is satisfied with us when grace is received
and given. The quest never ends, but we can grow in
God's grace and glory.
