HIS PRESENCE, OUR PEACE
The Bible begins with the words, "In the beginning God..." This phrase launches our most authentic affirmation for the existence of God. It sets the stage for everything else in holy scripture. It is noteworthy, however, that scripture does not explain the existence of God, nor does it resolve the vast mysteries of His eternal operations. We continue to be awed by the dynamics of God's creation. We are often overwhelmed by the vast amount of goodness as well as the escalating evil which converges upon us at various times.
We search the Bible for simplistic solutions and find that its heroes were also struggling to put life's puzzle together. Our Lord Jesus, while on this earth, did not say He had come to explain the world, but that He had overcome the world. There is a tremendous difference. In His humanity, our Lord himself was often baffled by life's perplexities, but never to the point of disobeying the Father's will. Amid the excruciating pain of Calvary, His words rang into the darkness, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" This is not to imply that God leaves us hopeless in the face of life's mystery. It means that while the perplexities of life are beyond our human explanation, we are never beyond the care of our loving God.
Perhaps in our struggle to adjust to life's unexplainable events, we grow more dependent on God. Our faith teaches us to rely on His tender providence. If we should ever fully grasp the majestic mystery of divine operations, we would lose much of our need for God. The proud human mind has a terrible tendency toward rebellion. Could it be a part of God's grace to use mystery as a means of keeping us close to the source of our salvation?
Let us not despair, therefore, when life appears to have more puzzle that explanation. Let us learn to love and lean on one another as together we seek the light of our heavenly Father. His truth is ever ready to invade our inquiring minds. His spirit will refresh our weary souls. And remember, His presence will always precede our peace.
