DEATH IN GOSPEL PERSPECTIVE

AP.jpg In the evening of life there is a sunset glow.  The culmination of faith focuses upon the light at the end of the tunnel.  Belief in the hereafter guards againstthe clouds of gloom.  When there is little left but God and the human soul, the cares of life lose their ability to harass us.  The pains of the past are absorbed in tomorrow's hope.  People who seek to do us harm have no power to interrupt our fellowship with God.  We lose our fear of those who can only harm the body.  We gain our courage from Him who is the lover and protector of our souls.  Twilight time is a peaceful interlude between life's rigorous demands and heaven's quiet repose.  The closer we get to God the more we find the joy of somber thoughts in the expression of our praise.

For some it may seem strange to reflect upon the final chapters of life.  Death seems so far away when we are young.  Why focus on that morbid reality before our days are half spent?  Should not the energy of youth be spent on things at hand?  The answer is most assuredly "yes."  To become unnecessarily preoccupied with the end of life before life has hardly begun could lead to a premature despair.  However, were it not for death we might never learn the meaning of life.  The fact that one day we shall die motivates us to make the most of our days.  Deep within us is a need to contribute something worthwhile before the final curtain falls.

Another reason for us to reflect on death is that we prepare for its impact upon our lives.  There is no way we are going to get out of this world alive.  Coming to terms with death is much better than rebelling against it.  The final chapter can be one of tragedy or triumph, whichever we prefer.  Faith in God leads us to believe there is more than a traumatic conclusion to life.  There can be creative anticipation of what lies ahead.  Death can be seen as friend and not foe.  We do not have to go on living with the limitations, penalties, and perplexities of this life.  We can move into that "mysterious realm like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."

"Come, then, let us reason together.  Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.".  Though your life be filled with misery and woe, it shall be as bright as God's promises.  You may feel no need to think about death.  In doing so, however, you may find a death-defying disposition toward the rest of life.  May the evening of life give you a sunset glow.
