CONFIDENCE

AP.jpg Confidence is a serious item on the chart of our personality needs.  It contributes to our productivity by giving us a wholesome sense of self-worth.  Confidence enables us to feel secure in what we are able to say and do.  It is the ability to believe in ourselves even when others may doubt our potential.  Without confidence we lose the pep of our personality.  We lose the inner strength to project an outgoing disposition.  As we develop a sagging self-image we lack the willpower to succeed.  It is a tragic waste of spiritual and mental energy when we lose our confidence.  We can never be all God wants us to be if our composure is limited.

Confidence is the product of our faith.  It begins with a strong belief that God is in us to work His will and purpose.  We take our cue from Paul who said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." With the backing of the Holy Spirit we have confidence that all things can work for good if we love God.  Sometimes fear is a deterrent to our confidence.  It causes us to focus on our weaknesses rather than our strengths.  The psalmist comes to our rescue by reminding us that "the Lord is our light and our salvation whom shall we fear? The Lord is the stronghold of our lives of whom shall we be afraid?" This kind of faith in God is the basis of a confident commitment.

Faith in others is likewise a prerequisite for healthy confidence.  Our ability to believe in someone else enhances our ability to believe in ourselves.  Mistrust and doubt are the result of a poor self-image.  To find folk who are stable and trustworthy is to find models for our own self-confidence.  On the other hand, people who are nervous and insecure will rob us of our optimistic spirit.  We must not give people the power to take away our confidence.  As we seek the best in others and find the best in ourselves, we develop a fellowship of confident personalities.

Furthermore, faith in ourselves is the bottom line of our confidence.  It gives us the energy and the courage to reach our potential.  Believing that we can produce and survive amid the intimidating factors of life is necessary for our confidence.  This does not mean we will always succeed.  It means that failure will not have the last word.  We accept God's grace and humbly develop self-forgiveness with confidence.  We trust God and the positive encouragement of our friends to boost our morale and give us a confident spirit.
